Did you know that most people think that a mid-life crisis is due to hormonal and other chemical changes in the body?

Did you know that most people think that the symptoms of a mid-life crisis are due to many reasons other than a mid-life crisis?

Could you or anyone you know be going through a mid-life crisis?

Here are some signs that one may be going through a mid-life crisis:

  • Apathy
  • Weight Gain
  • Jealous of others
  • Unusual Pain
  • Asking yourself deep probing questions
  • Feel like you are slowly losing your mind
  • Cannot sleep through the night
  • Vision of the future is dismal
  • Constantly bored
  • Overly concerned about your appearance
  • Or you stop caring about your appearance completely
  • Little or no interest in sex
  • You think your best years are behind you
  • You think every bad day means you are having a mid-life crisis.
There are two mountains (sometimes referred to as wall which you use a ladder to climb) that people can climb in life.

The mountain of SUCCESS and the mountain of SIGNIFICANCE.

You can read more about the two mountains in these two articles:
  1. The Tale of Two Mountains
  2. Your Mission Should You Choose to Accept It

Through our early influences via parents, teachers, family, media and friends, most of us have been attempting to climb the ladder of success (including me), which is typically the ladder of corporate success. Unfortunately this idea of success just gets perpetuated generation after generation so much so now that is has caused serious mental health issues.

Most often, the mountain of SUCCESS does not lead to happiness and fulfilment. You have been giving all your energy, especially during the best years of your life, to achieve success then only to realise that you are not exactly happy or fulfilled. That makes a lot of people feel gutted. This feeling/emotion is what is really called mid-life crisis.

Since emotions are the biggest drivers of action or inaction, people have different reactions to this sunken feeling.

People usually have one of three responses to 'mid-life crisis' and you can get deeper details in this article.

One response is Denial where people tend to 'fill the hole' with further pursuit of external pleasures like shopping, partying, socialising, drinking, multiple sex partners, body enhancements etc.

Another response is what I call Resignation where people have decided to pursue the same path thinking that they cannot change. They tend to lose themselves physically (putting on weight, dressing shabby etc) and emotionally. Sometimes they may try to feel better by doing yoga and meditation. This is often the choice when they think that these activities require little energy (because they have little energy) but it still might be helpful. It seldom is in dealing with the core issue.

The best response is to do the work to find more meaning and purpose in life and live a purpose-driven life. You may have heard the saying that 'Life begins at 40' which is really about the people who do find purpose and fulfilment at embody it in everything that they do. LIfe becomes exciting and this is why most of the ultra successful people actually achieve success in their late 40's and 50's.

Recently I have noticed that mid-life crisis is actually happening earlier in life and some are experiencing it in their 30's. I believe that the younger generations are more in touch with their purpose and this is why they are getting frustrated with climbing the SUCCESS mountain.
