Most Important Part
What’s the most important part of a car?
Did you think ‘engine’?
That’s the most common answer I get when I ask the question.
But it’s not the correct answer.
Tires! you might have also thought.
Not the correct answer.
Are you now thinking the transmission?
Still not the correct answer.
Ah ha, the driver! Nope, still not the correct answer.
The answer is, the most important part of the car is the part that is missing.
With the best engine in the world, the car will not be able to achieve its objective if it had no wheels or the transmission was not working.
What is the part that is missing in your life or business that is preventing you from achieving your goals?
What if it was a little fuse hidden somewhere you cannot even see it?
This is the reality for most people, they are not aware of what is keeping them back from their success.
Recently, I was in Toronto, Canada giving a Keynote and I asked the group the same question. Many people volunteered their answers with such surety that their answer was right.
When I told them the answer the reaction was shocking. It was like the entire crowd had this simultaneous ‘ah ha’ moment. When the participants were asked what were the things that stood out for them for the entire seminar, the question of what is the most important part of a car was one of the top two.
I realised that this question was as simple and profound for them as it was for me when I first heard it so I had to share it with you.
As human beings we are all striving for more. Part of the reason we are here on this earth is growth and this forms a big part of our happiness.
But many of us are not happy.
Are you where you want to be in life?
If not, have you figure out why and what is missing?
I know you are willing to work hard and do what is necessary to achieve what you want to achieve in life and if you are in fact putting in a lot of hard work but not necessarily achieving the results that you want, you are not having the growth you want and you are at a place in life where you did not think you would be right now.
You could be driving the best car in the world and you could be driving very fast but you will never get to your destination if you are heading in the wrong direction. So many people are working hard (driving very fast) but the work is not necessarily pointed in the right direction for them or in a direction that will not lead them to their destination.
I believe that our ultimate journey and destination has to do with our purpose. Buddha said that our main purpose in life should be to find our purpose and live it. Have you found your purpose? Perhaps you have but are you living it or have you pushed it to the back of your mind hoping to get to it one day?

With the best oiled engine and transmission and with great tires we may still not get to our destination. A blown fuse somewhere inside the dashboard where you cannot see can also prevent you from getting to your destination. I call these limiting beliefs, self saboteurs and blind spots. They are there, but you cannot see them! And they are keeping you back from achieving your goals. I will give you a personal example.
I grew up very poor so I became a saver as although we did not have much money, I liked nice things. So I used to save my lunch, drink and snack money in school and instead drink water from the pipes. So I developed a saver money personality. While this might be a good thing sometimes it also prevented me from making good investment decisions earlier in my life. I remember going to an investment seminar on stocks and I learnt a lot and was ready to go out and trade. As I was walking out of the seminar I could literally see my saver mindset overriding my decision to invest in stocks. My mind made up all sorts of excuses to keep my money in a savings account versus investing some in stocks.
We have self saboteurs in all areas of our lives including money and finances, relationships, health, emotions, career and business.
