Screw SMART Goals

From my recent article on the Science of Attraction, I have received a lot of requests for Strategy Sessions to get people on their way to using the  Science of Attraction effectively to achieve the life they want, be it in career, money, health, business or relationships.

From these sessions, and my experience of dealing with thousands of people on the issue, the ability to set proper goals is a real challenge. It is unfortunate that professionals could complete up to a doctoral level and still never learn to set a goal properly. Many  organisations have performance management systems and in my almost 20 years experience in Human Resources, there are very few organisations and therefore very few professionals who are able to set a goal in the right way. At best they learn about SMART goals and while this is a good start, it is grossly insufficient to setting proper goals.

To get the Science of Attraction to work for you,  there is one critical thing that you need to KNOW and there is one critical thing you need to be able to DO.

  1. You need to KNOW how the relationship between the conscious and sub-conscious mind.
  2. You need to be able to set GOALS properly.

I will deal with #2 in this article and then #1 in a subsequent article.

The first step is to be open minded and really forget most of what you have been told or read about goals before.

Learning to set the ‘RIGHT’ goals for me and how to set them ‘Completely’ has really changed my rate of progress in life.

Before I learned the scientific process of setting and achieving goals, I did have a Vision of what I wanted my life to be and I was always working towards it. Vision and Action are critical to advancement in life but Goals really pushes you forward faster.

One of my very good friends always  encouraged me to set goals and write them down but my relative success really made me apathetic to setting and writing down my goals. This is where sometimes, small success could be a hindrance to greater successes. My life could have been far advanced had I listened but it is what it is and I have learned my lesson.

Here are the 10 critical elements for a complete goal:

  1. Specific – when you write your goal it must be very clear about what you want. A perfect stranger should be able to read your  goal and determine if you have achieved it or not. In one of my recent strategy calls I asked the  client what is your goal and their response was ‘I want to advance my career’. I asked her is she was Santa Clause or a Genie and she  was able to grant wishes what would she give a person who is asking to advance their career. She  busted out  in loud laughter when  she realise how vague  her so-called goal was. Your goals need to be specific, you need to be able to describe clearly what goal achievement looks like.
  2. Probable – Normally when you hear or read about SMART goals, the ‘A’ usually represents Attainable and the ‘R’ usually represents Realistic . In the world of scientific goal achievement, these two words are abolished. All goals are attainable and history has proven that man has been able to constantly push  the envelop of what is possible. The word Realistic is somewhat meaningless, I find it makes no sense. Was it realistic many years ago to put a tube of steel in the air and send it to space and land on another planet? One of my favorite quotes on the topic is by Will Smith  who said ‘Realistic is the most common path to mediocrity.  I prefer to use the  word Probable. You should be able to achieve your goal based on your level of development. When I asked another client, what is your goal, she said ‘I am currently a stay at home mom and my income is $0 so I want to move from $0 to $1M in one year’. Can she move from $0 to $1M in one year? Sure its possible but is it probable for her based on how she has developed herself. Has she developed herself and or identified a business idea to be able to earn $1M a year. Is she millionaire material?
  3. Time Limit – do you have a completion date in your  goal? If not, its not a goal. A goal without a date is not a goal. I have found  that the #1 reason that people do not put a date to their goal is that they are fearful that they may not achieve the  goal by that time frame. Here is a little known secret, successful people most often do not meet their deadlines. They either hit the  goal way before and set another goal or miss the deadline date and continued to pursue the goal as they understand that ‘failure’ is really ‘feedback’ about something that they don’t know or don’t know how to do something.
  4. Written – have you written down your goal? Can you show it to me right now? A goal not written down is also not a goal. In my next article on understanding the  relationship between the conscious and subconscious  mind I will explain the impact of constantly looking at a written goal has on the  sub-concious mind and how it helps greatly in goal achievement.
  5. Present Tense – is your  goal written in the  present tense? As if it is already achieved? Successful people begin with  the  end in mind and therefore if the  desired end is successful achievement of  the goal, then you have to start from that point. Goals should be written in present tense. In my next article I will explain how the present tense impacts the sub-conscious mind and how it quickens goal achievement.
  6. Emotions – do you have the  right emotions aligned to your goal? Does your  goal excite you? Is your  goal a burning desire? Have you identified how you would feel when the goal is achieved? With  the thousands of people I have dealt with, when I asked them why do they want to achieve their goal or what it would do for them if they achieved their goal it always comes down to the fact that the goal achievement will lead to a feeling of satisfaction, fulfilment or happiness. Emotions are the critical driver of perseverance to goal achievement. You will encounter challenges on your way to goal achievement and it is the emotions attached to your goals that will keep you from quitting. Quitting  is easy, that is why  so many people quit at their goals, hope, dreams and aspirations.
  7. Challenges – have you  identified and written down the expected challenges on your way  to achieving your goal? It is easier to defeat the  enemy if you know who they are. Challenges are essential to goal achievement. They serve two purposes. The first critical purpose of challenges is to ensure that you really really want what you  say  you  want. When your goal is a burning desire, you will be able to perserve through any challenge. Most people do not have the right goals for them so it is not really a burning desire and they accept the possiblity of failure even before they start pursuing their goals. The second critical reason for challenges is to ensure that you  have learned what you need to learn in order to achieve their goals. Let’s be honest, if you knew what you need to know and know how to do what you need to achieve success then you  would have already accomplished what you  want to accomplish. There are obviously gaps and challenges are there to identify those gaps.
  8. Celebrate – have you identified how you are going to celebrate the achievement of your  goal? There is a part of the brain that craves recognition and celebration. Successful people are great at celebrating. Celebrating reiinforces success to the brain. It let’s it know that pursuing and achieving goals is a good thing and fun to do. It makes future successes easier.
  9. Sacrifices – have you listed what you are going to sacrifice in your pursuit of the goal? You must be able to identify what you  are willing to  give up to be able to accomplish your goal. The  bigger the  goal, the bigger the sacrifices you will have to make in the accomplishment of the goal. Typical sacrifices include time (including time away from family and friends), certain activities, certain relationships, money and/or some of the things you are accustomed purchasing or would like to purchase.
The most successful people are willing to make the sacrifices that most other people don’t want to make and this is why they have what most other people won’t have.
  10. Your  Goal – most people set goals based on other’s people views and opinions. Oscar Wilde, Irish philosopher once said ‘ most people are other people’ and what he meant was that most people set goals and visions for themselves based on what their parents want them to do, what their wider family wants them to do and what they think would equal success in the eyes of ‘society’. It is important to be able to set goals based on what you feel is your purpose, your divine appointment on this earth.

Science of Attraction – How to use it to get what you want in life.

Have you ever heard of the Law of Attraction?

Do you think it’s kind of woo woo?

I understand why you might think so but do you know that their is scientific research that proves how it works?

Stop for a moment and really listen to all of the  sounds around you. It could be  the air condition unit/vent, music, cars on the road, people speaking, a radio, a cell phone ringing……

Now imagine that someone was sitting in front of you and they were speaking and you were listening to them. Would you still be hearing the cars, the ac, music, other people speaking?

Actually your ears will still be picking  up all of those sounds but  you really won’t be hearing them while you are listening to the person in front of you.

How does that work? How does focusing on the person you  are listening  to drown out the other sounds?

We were all blessed with a Reticular Activating System (RAS) which is located in the core of the brain stem. This essentially acts as a filter, firstly so that we don’t do freaking mad by having to consciously process all the various stimuli that the  brain  is bombarded with  every second of our waking life. In other words to prevent us from consciously processing the sounds from the cars on the road, the ringing cell phone, people speaking all at the  same time. It is also filters what goes into our subconscious mind from the conscious mind, but more on that later.

So how does the RAS know what to focus on, in this example, which of the sounds your are hearing, to give the most attention to? It knows what to focus on, simply by what we tell it to focus on.

But Shane, I don’t speak to my RAS!

You do, but in a sub conscious manner.

The RAS is programmed by what you  focus on and what you  give your repeated attention. Usually enhanced when there is good strong emotion attached to it. So have you even noticed when you decided to buy a car or another item that suddenly you start to see other cars like that? It’s not that a lot of people went out and bought that car just because you got interested in buying one like that. The cars were always there  (like the sounds around you) but now you  have placed focus on that particular car, the RAS gets programmed to focus  on that particular car.

What if you  can deliberately, instead of subconsciously, program your RAS to focus on the opportunities and things that will help you to achieve the life that you want?

You can and I will explain in this article.

The RAS works like Google, or rather Google was designed based on how the RAS works. Your body is such an amazing thing.

When you enter a search on Google, the system looks for the most frequently viewed page containing your seach criteria in the most recent past. It goes through millions of pages in a nanosecond and locates and prioritises based on the most frequently accessed and relevant pages.

Your RAS works the same way. It is programmed by the most frequent and repetitive thoughts that you have. The  trouble is that 90% of our thoughts are subconscious, meaning that you are not aware of most of your thoughts and therefore not aware of how  you are programming your RAS.

But the brain  is very trainable and just as how your repeitive thoughts are now on autopilot you can choose what your repetitive thoughts are and put the right thoughts on autopilot.

What thoughts would you want on autopilot?

Thoughts that would lead you to the life you  want to live, the thoughts that will help  you in achieving your goals be it career, relationship, health or money.

Having properly written goals which are reviewed everyday is how many successful people program their RAS to attract the things they want in their lives.

One of the  reasons many people think that the Law of Attraction is woo woo, it because they  think it means that you just have to think it and it will be yours.

It actually is that you  think it and the opportunities, people and resources to achieve the goals become more visible. Just like the car that you  decided to buy and similar ones suddenly becomes more visible to you.

This is why the law of attraction  fanatics say that you can have anything  that you want in life. It is true but it does not happen simply by  thinking  about  it, writing  it down and creating a vision board. These things help tremendously to achieving your goals but ACTION is always  required for goal achievement.

I remember coaching some financial advisors and I had two of them at the opposite end of the  scale in terms of success and income. I have one the company’s top performers and lets say she earned $3M a year. I had another one who earned $300K per year. They have very different clientele, or rather they have attracted very different clientelle. The more successful one is able to attract clients that can pay $30K a month  in premiums and the other attracts clients who can pay $300 per month. So in a crowded mall the top financial advisor is going to be able to pinpoint quite naturally the client who can potentially pay $30K per month in premiums and the  other financial advisor would pass that potential client like any other person in the mall.

This is how the law of attraction works and its scientific.

Now, there are other skills that you and the financial advisor would have to develop to become successful and maximising the opportunities that the  law of attraction creates.

The number one reason why people who try the law of attraction and do not have success is that they are constantly changing their minds about what they want. The number  one reason for this is that people do not have clearly focused goals. It is said that only 95% of the people in the world have goals and only 1% have laser focused goals.

Misconceptions of Happiness

Do you think Happiness is a journey or a destination?

Do you think Happiness is an inside game or an outside game?

Do you think money can buy you happiness?

What if you can find happiness in both the journey and the destination? Have you ever seen someone win a race or a sport match or graduate? No one can ever tell me that people are not happy in achieving their goal or arriving at their desired destination. The question of ‘what next?’ is often asked which  often gives the connotation that people are not contented or that happiness is fleeting.

Being contented does not mean that you remain stagnant after you  achieve your  goal or that you should settle for anything less than maximising  your  potential. As a matter of fact, science proves that nothing  is ever stagnant or static, every thing is always  in a state of movement or flux. You are either moving forward or backward. Many times, the illusion of contentment causes people to actually be moving backward and this could never lead to happiness. So many times it has been found that after years of so called contentment many people end up depressed or with a lot of regrets. A recent survey on terminally ill people indicated that the #1 regret they had was not doing more with their lives and maximising their potential.

Your level of happiness is really the total of the happy moments that your have in your life and you can find happiness in both the journey and the destination. Of course the journey is longer than the destination and there are more opportunities to find happiness in the process but the point is that you can find happiness in both the journey and the destination.

I believe that the journey  is more enjoyable when it is purposeful or linked to your purpose. Earl Nightengale defined success as the progressive realisation of a worthy ideal. There are two critical words in that definition, ‘progressive’ and ‘worthy’. As long as their is progress there is happiness but the direction of the progress is also important. The movement should be  in the direction of the worthy ideal.

Unfortunately most people never really stop to consider what is their ‘worthy ideal’. We quickly fall into the  routine of life where we are born, we get an education to get a job where we work our wholes lives to build a career, family and a home, educate the children, get old and ill and die.

I believe that people are often nudged about that ‘worthy ideal’, that purpose, that divine assignment but do not know how to make the first step to pursuing the worthy ideal and often overcome by fear. I was nudged for 10 years before I took any action towards my ‘worthy ideal’, my purpose but when  I did the  contentment was at a different level. I guess it is one of these things that I cannot describe to you but you will know when you  feel it. The signs of that contentement and happiness are increased energy, drive and enthusism, not wanting  to go bed because your  purpose is keeping you awake and cannot wait to get up in the morning as you are so excited about what you are doing in the world.

Another common saying about happiness that may confuse people in their pursuit of happiness is that we should not pursue happiness in things that are not lasting.

Life itself is not lasting so why do we expect happiness to be lasting?

While you cannot be happy in every moment of life, the key is to find happiness in as many moments in life as you can. The key to this is living life on PURPOSE. If you eat purposefully then you will be happy in your moments of eating. If you exercise purposefully you will be happy in the moments you exercise.

If the job or career you are in is tied to your life purpose then you will be a lot happier.

There is a huge difference in being content in your job and being fulfilled in your job. I remember being very content in my job. I was a C-suite executive, with a very good salary in a great company and life was good. But like most people, I had several moments when I would stop and ask myself ‘is this it, is this what I am stuck with for the rest of my life? Is there something better for me?’ The reason that we ask these questions is because that there is most often something better and it is trying to come out of us and live, it is trying to find expression. It is just that you may not know the process to really identify your purpose.

I knew I had a deeper purpose, something better inside of me but it was stuck there for 10 years! I did not know what to do and I did not know who to speak with about it. I have now committed my life to living on purpose and helping people to find that purpose and turn it into profitable business/career without losing their financial security.

Life is simply too short to not to live on purpose. When are you going to do it?

People often say that happiness is a mindset, it is an inner game. I completely agree but I also think it is an outter game as well. We live in a physical world and life is just so designed that while we are on this planet we need physical things to survive and thrive.

You spend a significant amount of time on your jobs and careers so why can’t this be a source of happiness for you?

You eat at least 3 times a day, why can’t eating be a source of happiness?

You should exercise, so why can’t exercise be a source of happiness for you?

Most of us  are in one form of relationship or another, so why can’t our relationships be  a source of happiness?

Most of us have some material things, so why shouldn’t they be a source of happiness?

We all have money, so why can’t money be a source of happiness?

I plan to take my parents to Las Vegas this year and I am happy to have the money to afford it, I am happy that they will be happy to go to LasVegas, I will be happy to see them having fun  in Vegas and I will be happy that I could have done this for them. After that, I will find other things to be happy about.

There are so many monents and things to happy about but you will miss the opportunity if happiness and fulfiment are not a focus for you.

It is easier than most people think and you really don’t need to change a lot. It is not necessarily about changing  the things that you do but rather, the reason why you  are doing it. Finding  your ‘WHY’ can instantaneously change your state to one of more happiness. If for example you focus on the feeling of joy and satisfaction of taking care of your family then you might be a little happier doing that job in that aweful company. Should you change the job if you are not enjoying it? Hell yes, but you can still be happy while you are in your current job. You should try to avoid having a sucky job or a bad boss or organisation dictating your happiness.

In conclusion, happiness is both a jouney and a destination, it is both an inner game and an outter game, and money can be a source of happiness!

Goals, purpose, your job, your mind, your career, your relationships, your money, your vacations, your  food, your exercising, your charity work, your family, your  car, your  house…………could all be sources of happiness.

Successful but not Happy?

Are you successful but not fulfilled and happy?

If you answered yes, thank you for your honesty. I can certainly identify with  you because for a long time I was what many might call successful but I was not totally fulfiled. I was an HR Director at 32 years old and had all the good perks etc. but I was knew that there was more to my life. Not until I was 37 did I do anything about  it but better late than never. I was walking up the first hole of Millenium Lakes golf course on a weekday. I had the time as work had slowed down due to the economic crisis of 2008 and my company had frozen my salary and thankfully did not send me home. Good deal, I had a salary over $120K per year, a fully paid up Mercedes Benz from the  company and work was slower than usual so I had time to play golf during the week.

But walking up the first hole it dawned to me that there was a whole lot more that I had to do in this world and at 37  I had a lot more years to give at a high level. I understand that for many people it would be a dream to relax at 37 with a $120K salary a fully paid up Benz and time to play golf in the middle of the week but I knew there was more.

I left that job in 2010 to start my consultancy and on my way back from my  first consulting job in North Africa, I stopped off in London for a few days to catch up  with some family and friends. I decided to peruse a book store and have some coffee. There I discovered a book on purpose and destiny and that absolutely changed my life forever. I then realised that I had known my purpose for at least 10 years prior to this but did not know how to express it and to move from what I was doing then to where I really needed to be. No family, friend or co-worker could help me as they were not equipped to. I needed a coach and a mentor. Because I did not have who I needed to succed and I understand the massive difference it can make in someones happiness I have now dedicated my life to helping people discover their purpose and turn it into profitable businness/career without losing their financial security.

So if you are successful but not fulfilled, then you might have a challenge with the goals your are pursuing and/or the activities you are involved with.

Yes I am suggesting that it is virtually impossible to be successful and not happy and fulfilled if you pursue the right goals (purpose based) for you. You might be thinking that everyone has their own definition of success and that no one can judge anyone’s success or happiness. I believe that everyone’s definition of success should be different but for a very different reason than most people’s reason for saying so.

Far to many times when we are not where we want to be in life, we change definitions to suit our individual situations and quite frankly make excuses. When we are not where we want to be in our financial life we change the definition of wealth to something like ‘your health is your wealth’, or we say ‘if you have family you have wealth’ or ‘your children is your wealth’ or ‘money cannot buy you happiness’.

No! Your health is your ‘health’ and your wealth is your wealth.

Your family is your family and your wealth is your wealth.

Your children are your children and your wealth is your wealth.

When I consulted the dictionary on the definition of wealth I got  ‘a great quantity or store of money, valuable possessions, property, brother riches’. There are other meanings but my point is that wealth has to do with money and let us not mix it up with health and family.

The same principle applies to the concept and definition of success. I have found that most people who are not where they want to be in life tend to offer up the notion that the definition of success is different for everyone and that we cannot judge another person’s success or happiness. Again, I agree with the idea that success should mean different things for different people, but for a very different reason.

First off, what is your definition of success? Most definitions in the dictionary tend to revolve around the idea of having a favourable outcome of an endeavour or goal.

How is it possible then, to have success without fulfilment and happiness? How could you not be happy if you have a favourable outcome of an endeavour or goal?

There are two main reasons why you can have success without fulfilment and happiness:

  1. You are using the wrong definition of success.
  2. You are setting the wrong goals and pursuing the wrong endeavours.

1. Your Definition of Success – One of the most applicable (to fulfilment and happiness) definitions of success I have come across is ‘success is the progressive realisation of a worthy ideal’. From now on, we will use this definition of success. This definition was put  forward by Earl Nightengale, also known as the father of personal development.

A key word in that definition is ‘progressive’. A key difference in this definition of success and the usual dictionary meaning is that this definition suggests a journey and progress while the typical dictionary meaning suggests that success is a destination. This is a critical difference.

Most people are so focused on the goal, the destination, (and they should be goal focused) that they do not enjoy the journey. What if success is both a journey and a destination? What if happiness could be found in both the journey and the destination? Would you not have more happy moments in your life if you enjoyed both the journey and the destination?

Happiness and fulfilment is the main aim of life. Ultimately the reason why we do anything is to feel a sense of fulfilment and happiness. Happiness is the main thing and Stephen Covey said that ‘the main thing is to keep the main thing, the main thing’. Anthony Robbins said that ‘success without fulfilment is the  ultimate failure’. That’s a very strong statement but it is true.

You can find happiness in the progress, in the journey of life, not only in the destination. This is why setting small milestones is important and frequent reflection on your progress can be something that reduces your stress and anxiety. Too many people get frustrated and stressed just by thinking a lot about the destination and how far they are from it. If you are able to break up your big goals into smaller milestones you will enjoy the journey a whole lot more and find more moments of joy, happiness and fulfilment.

Another key word in the definition of success is ‘worthy’. Some definitions of worthy include ‘deserving of respect and admiration’ and ‘having great merit, character and value’. The tangle that most people get themselves in is the societal definition of what is worthy and what is deserving of respect. The trouble is that we do not take time to really figure out what is worthy to us individually.

I believe that ‘worthy’ is very personal and unique to you and tied to your purpose. Worthy means that it has to spark your desire. it has to be a burning desire, not just an ordinary pursuit.

One of the reasons that over 80% of people are generally dissatisfied with their jobs is that they are not pursuing a ‘worthy’ career. Not that what they are doing is not adding value or that they are doing something meaningless, it is that it is not aligned to their unqique purpose or at least they do not feel purposeful about it. There is no real burning desire. Their jobs do not cause them to jump out of bed without an alarm clock because it is so exciting.

Unfortunately most people get to choose a career early in life without first examining their true purpose and desires. They get to choose their careers before they can legally buy a beer. Careers are often dictated by parental influence and pressure, keeping up with the Jones, perceived market needs, wrong perceptions of what the career is all about etc. This leads to lack of fulfilment and low motivation.

To have both success and fulfilment it is critical for it to be aligned to your purpose, your divine appointment in this life.

2. Wrong Goals – determining the right goals for you can go a long way in having fulfilment and happiness. The vast majority of people give up on their goals and aspirations long before it’s accomplishment or lack there of. There are multiple reasons for classifying a goal as a wrong goal:

  1. Goal is not tied to your purpose or a purpose.
  2. No analysis is done to determine real gaps. Gaps make great goals.
  3. Goal is not SMART.
  4. Limiting and pre-conceived notions of how to achieve the goal.
  5. Goal does not spark a strong emotion.
  6. There is no identification of the challenges that you will encounter in the accomplishment of the goal.

  1. Goal is not tied to your purpose or a purpose – in our definition of success earlier, we dealt with the concept of a ‘worthy’ goal or ideal and suggested that the most worthy goals are tied to your life purpose. It is therefore important to identify your purpose and develop goals that are in alignment with your purpose. Once you are living your purpose and moving from goal to goal there must be fulfilment and happiness.
  2. Doing an analysis, including a self analysis is a necessary pre-requisite to setting the right goals for you. For example, psychometric tests are great for determining career goals. Emotional tests are good for setting relationship as well as career goals. Many people miss this very important step. Many of my students and clients have commented that the self analysis is probably one of the most revealing and life changing activity in our goal setting process. Analysis reveals gaps that these gaps also form essential and smaller goals connected to bigger goals.
  3. Most people would know of the acronym SMART, yet 95% of people are not able to set a SMART goal. They are able to get some elements of the acronym correct but even one element missing can lead to the goal not being achieved and stress and frustration. One of the most common mistakes that people make when they get all hyped and jump on the goal setting train is that they set highly improbable goals which means its not Achievable. Now, anything is possible but the real question is if your goal is probable. If its not, you will stop pursuing it when you are not making the progress you expected. Very recently I was asking someone what was their goal for the new year and they said to move from $0 to $1M in one year. Is that possible? Of course it is! Is it probable? Highly unlikely. Most people are not aware of the personal work required to develop themselves into someone who is worth $1M a year.
  4. When you have a goal, it is possible that there are several ways to achieve the goal. However, many people limit their options of how they will proceed to achieve their goal and this could lead to dead ends and frustration.
  5. In the book Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill indicated that the first step in the achievement of a goals is a burning desire. When your goal does not spark a strong emotion when you think about it, you will eventually lose the desire to pursue the goal.
  6. Unexpected challenges can be a real blow to the accomplishment of your goal. While challenges are vital for success, most people do not identify possible challenges while setting their goals. The inability to anticipate and prepare for challenges in the accomplishment of goals can lead to failure and frustration.

What is Happiness?

What is your definition of Happiness?

Most people say that happiness has a different meaning for everyone and it means different things to different people.

While this might be so, I feel that this is used as a convenient response by many people to hide their own unhappiness or lack of drive to pursue happiness.

When I looked up the meaning of happiness in the dictionary, happiness is defined as:

“a mental or emotional state of well being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. Happy mental states may also reflect judgments by a person about their overall well being.”

Let’s look at this definition carefully.

A mental or emotional state ……. which tells us that how you think about things affect your happiness and that your thoughts impacts your happiness. Most of our thoughts are automatic and subconscious and to a large extent we do not have much control of our thoughts. The great news is however that we can change the thoughts that happen on an automatic basis and even better news is that it does not have to take a long time. This is amazing because it means that you can put happy thoughts on automatic.

Now the brian is like velcro for negative things and like teflon for positive things so it does take work to get the brain thinking happy thoughts. Thankfully, there is a process and framework to get the brain to a positive mental state on autopilot and this process is part of the Scientific Happiness system.

Most of the things we do today are on autopilot. For example I am pretty sure that you did not think of brushing your teeth today. Your brain looks at what you do habitually for a while and then automates it.

What if you can do an exercise for 5 minutes everyday for 21 days where you focus on the things you are grateful for, you will set the brain on autopilot to think grateful thoughts. It is impossible not to be happy when you  are thinking of the things you are grateful for.

Positive or pleasant emotions‘ ………. which tell us that we have a choice to be positive or negative about the things that happen in life. Now I know that stuff happens and we cannot be happy absolutely all of the time but certainly we have a choice in the majority of events in our life to either be happy or unhappy about it. It is said that events in our life is not really the problem but rather how we think about it.

With today’s technology we understand more than any other time in history how the brain works with respect to emotions. The brain essentially has an emotional centre (limbic brain) and a logic centre (cerebral cortex). Any stimuli that we have goes through the nervous system and up into our brain. The signal first goes to the emotional centre of the brain so we always first have an emotional response to the stimuli. Sometimes the signal stays right there in the limbic brain and if it is negative stimuli we sometimes have emotional highjack.

When the signal travels to the front of the brain, the logical brain or the cerebral cortex we are able to process the stimuli in a logical way and make a more informed decision now having been processed both emotionally and logically. The ability to identify our emotions and manage it properly is what is known as Emotional Intelligence.

Scientific Happiness builds your emotional intelligence and give better control of emotions leading to emotional freedom and happiness.

‘…ranging from contentment to intense joy….’ One of the best definitions of Happiness that I have ever heard is by Shawn Achor who defined Happiness as ‘the joy you feel moving towards your fullest potential‘. Joy is something that you can still feel even in the midst of something that may not be pleasurable. Moving to your fullest potential is going to take hard work, risks, and disappointment but you can still feel Joy in the progress that you are making.

There is the notion that successful and rich people are not happy because of the struggles to get there, but what successful people know that most people don’t know is that challenges and struggles are critical to success. It is the mindset towards the struggle that helps these successful people to overcome the challenge. They embrace challenges and are positive in their mindset about the challenges understanding that there is joy in the battle as well as the result of success.

The best saying I have heard on the issue of challenges is from Mr. Holton Buggs who said that the size of your dreams is equal to the size of your obstacles that will stop you from achieving your goals. Knowing this, it is still possible to find joy and happiness in tough times.

In Shawn Achor’s definition of happiness, he refers to the idea of one’s fullest potential. Scientific Happiness holds the notion that your fullest potential is tied to your purpose. We believe that we are all placed on this earth for a purpose and a reason, a divine appointment and our highest potential is living that purpose. We believe that many people are unhappy in their jobs (latest survey suggests that approximately 82% of people are generally dissatisfied with their job) because it is not aligned to their purpose or at least purposeful.

Purpose is at the core of Scientific Happiness and believes its like a sin to not find and live your purpose. The word ‘sin’ has a greek origin and it is related to archery and means to ‘miss your mark’. We believe to not find and live your purpose is to miss your mark. Scientific Happiness is a system to help people find their purpose and turn it into profitable careers (jobs or business) without losing their financial security.

‘…reflect judgements by a person about their overall well being‘…….we looked at the main areas of peoples live, the things that consumes peoples time and emotion and created a process to find success, happiness and fulfilment in these areas. We see happiness as both a journey and a destination. So Scientific Happiness looks at the scientifically proven process to create success and fulfilment in the core areas of physical health and wellness, emotional life, relationships, career, money and finances, spirituality and fun and recreation.

If we are overweight or generally unhealthy it is tough to feel good about ourselves and Scientific Happiness has a process to help people lose weight and generally live healthier and happier lives. Our physical health impacts our emotional life. If you see someone with their shoulders drooped you automatically assume something is wrong and the person is not in a positive mental state, so this is proof that our emotional state impacts our physical state and vice versa. Theres is a science of emotions and Scientific Happiness gives a proven process to control your emotions and even increase your positive emotions.

Our relationships have the single biggest impact on our happiness and how we feel about ourselves. Broken relationships affects our self esteem whilst great relationships can boost your positive emotions and self image. Happiness is not only an inside game, it is both and inside game and an outside game. Scientific Happiness uses a proven process to help you have better relationships.

We spend most of our adult lives building a career and success in this area affects our happiness. Currently close to 80% of people are generally dissatisfied with their jobs and this has a ripple effect in other areas of our lives including relationships, money and emotional life. At Scientific Happiness, we believe that the key to a successful career is finding and doing what you love which we believe is tied to your life purpose. We believe  that you will be most happy when you are doing the thing you were placed on this earth to do, your purpose. At Scientific Happiness, we help people find their purpose and turn it into profitable careers (jobs or business) without losing their financial security.

Are you Ready?

Every individual has hopes, dreams and aspirations beyond what he/she is today. But what are the things that really holds one back? Is it the lack of knowledge, desire, mentorship, or money?

For the greater part of my life, although I knew I had knowledge, desire, mentorship and money,   I was not ready to accomplish my hopes, dreams and aspirations. This frustrating experience that I previously underwent helps me to put myself in your shoes too. The frustration level in me may have been a little bit higher because I did not push myself to live my hopes, dreams and aspirations.

William James once said, “Your hopes dreams and aspirations are legitimate. They are trying to take you airborne, above the clouds, above the storms, if you only let them.” I firmly believe in his words because your hopes, dreams and aspirations will NEVER get erased in your mind even if you have been pushing it back to the corner of your mind.

Besides, various situations that life poses will definitely make you rethink on where you are, where you want to be and want you want to do. It is said that hindsight is 20/20 and this holds high significance in my life in many ways. Though I had hopes, dreams and aspirations, my negligence and laxity thwarted me from achieving success. Looking back at my life, I attribute my unpreparedness of following my dreams to three main factors. They are:

1) Lack of actionable knowledge or the ‘right knowledge’ 2) Poor mentorship and coaching, and 3) Lack of associations

These three aspects are intricately linked and when properly combined they form a tremendous force that pushes you towards your hopes, dreams and aspirations.

Importance of Right Knowledge, Mentorship and Associations

Today, I can specifically recall two situations from my life which clearly demonstrates, how having the right knowledge, mentorship and associations would make a big difference.

The first time I had chance to experience the importance of right knowledge was when I attended a conference conducted by American Society for Training and Development (ASTD now ATD) in San Francisco in the mid-1990s. While attending the conference, I also had an opportunity to attend a session on BHAGs, Big Hairy Audacious Goal – an idea that was conceptualized in the book, “Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies” by James Collins and Jerry Porras. The session was not only interesting and valuable but also inspired me to implement various ideas to my work.

In their book, Built to Last, James Collins and Jerry Porras have laid equal emphasis on the importance of ‘Core Values’. The clear understanding of every word of the book made me go back to my organisation and leader to discuss and examine the next phase of our company’s development. It is then, we decided to implement the core value programmes which turned out to be a resounding success.

Gradually, I learnt that the lesson on BHAGS, was too extensive for me to grasp. Moreover, I had no mentor or right association to discuss the information I comprehended.  It is here I realised that right mentorship and association are highly beneficial to maximise the value of these sessions and more importantly, to carry out some specific actions after gaining knowledge. I firmly believe that the knowledge, mentorship and associations that are essential to live our hopes, dreams and aspirations are all out there, it’s just that we are not ready to receive them. In short, we are not programmed to accept them.

At the time of the conference, I could not grasp the importance of setting Big Hairy Audacious Goals because I was not exposed to it before and none of the people I associated with at the time ever spoke about having big goals. Today, I have Big Hairy Audacious goals only because I started to read different books from what are used in most universities and I started to associate with the people who are living proof of having set and achieved Big Hairy Audacious goals.

I got the right information almost 20 years ago but was not ready for it. How different my life could have been if I was ready to receive that information back then. Are you ready? Do you have the right mindset and mentorship?

How to ‘programme’ your mind to achieve success?

Did you ever have a wish of buying a car? Did you suddenly start to witness many such similar cars on road? Most likely your answer would be yes.

It is important for you to understand that the car which you wished to buy was always there on roads, but your fondness for the car has caught your attention. Before you conceived the idea of buying the car in your mind, though you witnessed several of those cars, you failed to pay attention because it was just another car on the road. The difference is that you have now started to FOCUS on that car, so you started to see more of it.

The brain has a Reticular Activating System (RAS) that operates similarly to Google. Your brain processes millions of stimuli. It is important to prioritize and focus on those things which we wish to achieve. How do we instruct the brain on what to focus on? The brain captures your most consistent thoughts that have strong emotions attached to them. Programming your mind can be done by FOCUSING on your repetitive thoughts.

Accordingly, when you frequently think about the car that you want to buy, it starts to program the RAS and whenever the same or similar car passes in your vicinity, your attention is drawn towards the car amidst of all the other stimuli in your environment. You tune out of all the other sights and sounds around and only tune into the car. When you  get clear on your goals and place focus on it, you  will begin to see the opportunities to realise to hopes, dreams and aspirations. Lack of focus is the major hindrance while chasing our dreams, hopes and aspirations.

In the meantime, if you are absolutely focused on your dreams, hopes and aspirations, we will take you through the complimentary strategy session to set you on the  right path. Register here http://shaneram.com/happiness-strategy-session/ and reap the benefits of this complimentary session.

The second situation where I received insightful information, but was unprepared was when I was purchasing a piece of land. The owner was selling the land at half the market price. Therefore, I assumed I was getting a really good deal.

Despite landowner’s explanation, I failed to understand that the land gained value only if it was sold or rented out. For that reason he sold the property and invested on another that offered him consistent and regular cash flow. I purchased the land for $50K and he invested that money on a backhoe which he is renting for daily income. I am sure he has made several thousand on my $50K while I have not made a cent on my investment. However, with the right knowledge now, I have promised myself not to commit the mistake again.

This failure was due to my unreceptive to the information provided to me.

He understood the importance of cash flow but at that time I did not, at least in the wealth context. I later understood the importance of cash flow only after I read a few books and attended seminars on wealth creation. This experience prepared me enough to receive the right information, irrespective of subjects..

Actionable Knowledge and the Right Knowledge –‘‘Right’ knowledge is the one that will best help you live your hopes, dreams and aspirations. The knowledge must also be actionable so that you can immediately implement what you have acquired.

Though I have earned two Master’s Degrees, I have learnt that this isn’t the right knowledge required to achieve success in life. If you have not lived your hopes, dreams and aspirations, despite spending considerable time and money in education, you have not received the ‘right’ knowledge. Build to Last has undoubtedly set me on the right path while providing me with enough knowledge to achieve success. The books that lead you to the path of success is certainly neither available in universities nor in the libraries of companies.

Please share with us your comments below when you find actionable information.

2) Mentorship and Coaching – Books, schools and Youtube are all good sources of the ‘right’ knowledge but I have found that it is best to have a coach or a mentor who helps you translate and transfer the knowledge into action. According to me, every person needs a mentor (someone who has achieved success) to help connect the dots. A coach must be someone who has successfully implemented and translated the knowledge you now have.

In fact, while reading Think and Grow Rich, the knowledge that I acquired the author’s grandson, Dr. J.B. Hill, from my two interactions was priceless and was something that was not found in the book. The wisdom shared with me by mentors, after successfully following the principles laid down in the book, Think and Grow Rich, not only helped me knowledge possession but also inspired me to raise above my belief which immensely contributed to my success.

The value that I received and continue to receive from my mentors and coaches is by far the single best investment I have made. The best mentorship and coaching is to have a one–on-one relationship with someone who has achieved a specific goal that you would also like to achieve in your life.

Let me know who your coach or mentor is. If you don’t have one, let us know the date you plan to get one.

3) Associations – it is said that your future is shaped by the books you read, the things you look at and the people you associate with. Your success is more dependent on the ‘WHO’ question(s) rather than on ‘WHAT’ question(s). Who do you read or listen to? Who is your coach or mentor? Who is in your success circle? Who do you associate with?

In retrospect, it is not that the people I associated with were bad when I did not know the purpose of life, but it is that they could not help me with where I wanted to go. When I found the purpose, I did not have anyone who I felt I could talk to about it. For that reason, I have decided to be that ‘someone’ who people can speak to about their hopes, dreams and aspirations and confidently embark on their journey towards success.

Who are the five closest people you associate with?

Most people fall out of love on Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day and I wish you all the love and happiness in the world.

However, I wanted to give you a warning about Valentines Day. By February 14th, 95% of people would have already given up on their goals and new year resolutions. They fall out of love with their goals and new year resolutions.

It is great to have goals and new year resolutions because our nature is one of growth and progress and usually our goals all are aimed at something greater than what we currently have and do. Tony Robbins once said that Happiness comes from progress and he is absolutely right as happiness is a journey.

Happiness is a journey towards our fullest potential. Just like success, happiness is really something that is unique to each individual but the trouble is that people have not really identified their uniqueness in the world. They pursue generic goals and dreams, those of other people and this is why they give up by Valentine’s Day, they fall out of love with their goals.

Oscar Wilde said ‘Most people are other people’ and this is so relevant up to today. Most people’s goals are based on what they see other people have and not really based on what will really make them happy and fulfilled. I truly believe that a major source of unhappiness and lack of fulfilment for people is that they are not living their uniqueness, their purpose, their reason for being on this earth.

You are probably in the position where I was for most of my life where I had some notion that there was more to my life than what I was doing but I did not know who to talk to and how to extract and articulate my purpose. When I discovered what I believe to be my purpose, my uniqueness, my reason for being on this earth it was so liberating and I am still in love with with my purpose, 7 years on. It is the reason that I have dedicated my life now to helping people to find their purpose and share it with the world without losing their financial security.

My book, How to Get Success to Start Chasing You is actually about purpose and the fact that when you find it and start to live it, success starts to chase you and you cannot help but become successful, fulfilled and happy.

Why Happiness?

Most people have given up on Happiness and many delay happiness for success. We delay our happiness to  complete that degree and then we will be happy.  We focus on our career and get it going and then focus on happiness or find my perfect partner and then we will be happy.

But the fact is that the main reason why we do anything that we do is to be Happy. We get that degree so we can get a job to make money to take care of our family and ourselves which ultimately suppose to bring us joy and happiness. If you ask yourself why you want anything you want in life enough times, you will come up with one final answer ‘My Happiness’.

Ultimately, people just want to be happy. Everything else they want is a means to an end. Everything we do either supports our Happiness or takes away from our Happiness.

Stephen Covey said ‘The main thing is to keep the main thing, the main thing’

The main thing is Happiness and if you keep this the main thing you will enjoy life better, you will be full of energy and vitality and everything will ‘work’ in your life.

Too many people delay Happiness, until they find that ideal job or perfect partner for marriage, or that masters degree but the greatest irony is that if they are first happy with where they are, the job, marriage, money will come a lot easier. Think about it, if you are working on something, do you think you will have more success if you are working on it in a happy state or a stressed state? Obviously you will have a higher probability of success if you are working on it from a Happy.

So the trick is to be happy in the process, not only in the destination (degree, great job, perfect spouse).

Scientific Happiness looks at the process, the things people are involved in on a daily or frequent basis and finds the most effective and scientifically proven technique to find success, fulfilment and happiness in that process. For example, we all eat to nourish our bodies every day for good health and wellness so Scientific Happiness and Scientific Wellness gives the scientifically proven techniques for optional health and wellness and ultimately happiness. Most of us are involved in one career or another so Scientific Happiness uses a scientifically proven process to help you identify your perfect career that will lead to  job and personal fulfilment.

Scientific Happiness believes that we can find fulfilment is all areas of life including health and wellness, emotional, relationships, career, money, spirituality, fun and recreation.

Scientific Happiness believes that we do not need to sacrifice one area of life happiness for another. For example we don’t believe that you have to sacrifice your health and relationships to have a successful career.

We have found simple, scientifically proven techniques to have success and fulfilment in all areas of your life because Happiness is the main thing.

Simple Tool to Increase Your Happiness, NOW!

You may have never thought about it but the reason why you do most things in your life is to get a ‘Feeling’, and perhaps the greatest of them is Happiness.

Aristotle said ‘Happiness is the most important thing in the world. The whole aim and end of human existence.’

To have anything big in your life it is going to take action and increasing and maintaining your happiness is going to take some action on your part.

A simple tool to increase your happiness is to pay attention to what makes you happy and what makes you unhappy. Identify the people, places, things, activities that make you happy and increase the number of times you do it.

Its really simple, your level of happiness is going to be a matter of how many happy moments you have in your life.

1) Make a list of what makes you happy on a consistent basis.

2) Put these things into your schedule and do more of it.

3) Identify and eliminate the things that make you unhappy on a consistent basis.

This is not to say that bad things will not happen to you but they should be episodic and not perpetual.

Death, injury, job loss, broken relationships will create bad moments for us but being perpetually unhappy about things makes no sense.

Things that make me happy:

Spending time with my daughter
Spending time with my wife traveling and experiencing the world.
Playing Golf
Listening/Reading stuff on personal development
Coaching/Training
Eating nice food
Drinking Organo Gold Coffee
Cooking for my family
Exercising
Quiet and alone time

Things that make me unhappy:
Conflicts and Arguments
Tension in relationships
Being around non-sensical and petty conversations
Donuts and other bad food

How to Really have a Happy New Year

Today is a great day to begin the process of really creating a Happy New Year.

In order to do this we must understand that we in fact create our lives but maybe more importantly how we create our lives.

We create our lives on three levels:

Thoughts
Words
Actions
Note that we can actually simplify it into two levels, Thoughts and Actions, as Words are really Thoughts expressed.

While all three are necessary in the creation of our lives, Thoughts are the most impactful. The exciting part is that we can actually put those powerful thoughts on autopilot so that we are constantly creating the happiest life possible.

So the biggest change you can implement to really make 2017 a Happy New Year is changing your Thoughts.

The challenge is that we are not aware of most of our thoughts. Science has shown that we have between 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts per day but over 90% of them happen at the subconscious level, so we are not aware of them. Although we are not aware them, they still create our lives.

Changing your thoughts is actually a lot easier than most people think. It is scientifically proven that you can develop a new habit in 21 days. Therefore you can change your habitual thought in 21 days!

One very powerful way of doing this is through affirmations. The best times to listen to affirmations are last thing before bed and first thing on rising in the morning.

You can create your own affirmations or here is a link to one I listen to before going to bed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lkCrPjmwks
